'AOC chose ideology over paychecks': Local Republican says she plans to defeat 'Bronx Bolshevik' Ocasio-Cortez whom she blames for chasing Amazon out of New York - Daily Mail

Ruth Papazian, a Republican from the Bronx, says she plans to run against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Ruth Papazian, a Republican from the Bronx, says she plans to run against Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a 'Bolshevik' who has brought 'socialism' to the Bronx and Queens, says a local Republican who is planning to unseat her.

Ruth Papazian, a Republican from the Bronx, says she plans to run against the upstart Democrat next year for the congressional seat from New York's 14th District.

Papazian blames AOC for leading the charge against a plan by Amazon to build a campus in Queens.

Ocasio-Cortez was among progressive New York Democrats who had objected to the $2.8billion in incentives from the city and New York state to woo Amazon to build a new headquarters in Long Island City.

Amazon, which had promised that the new headquarters would generate at least 25,000 jobs, abruptly canceled the plan in February after vocal opposition from progressives and community leaders.

When the company scrapped its plans to build in New York, AOC called it a big victory for progressive politicians.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has reached out to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in an attempt to get the retail giant to reconsider, according to The New York Times.

Papazian, a 61-year-old medical journalist who has lived in the Bronx her entire life, says she will position herself as the 'pro-jobs' candidate.

'[AOC] chose ideology over paychecks,' Papazian told the New York Post.

'People need jobs. We don't have economic diversity in the outer boroughs.'

Papazian, a 61-year-old medical journalist who has lived in the Bronx her entire life, blames AOC (seen above in Jackson Heights, Queens on March 16) for chasing Amazon out of New York City

The online retailer abandoned plans to build a second headquarters in Long Island City, Queens after progressive politicians, including AOC and others, protested tax incentives that the company would receive from the city and state

The daughter of immigrants from Egypt, Papazian says she has met with Republican Party officials to plan what would be a longshot candidacy.

Last November, Ocasio-Cortez defeated her Republican opponent, Anthony Pappas, with 78.2 per cent of the vote. Pappas won just 13.6 per cent.

Papazian says she will stress economic policy during her campaign.

She says that Ocasio-Cortez's environmental policies will also translate into fewer jobs.

'The Green New Deal is a job-killer,' Papazian told the Post.

Papazian told the New York Daily News that she has already set up an exploratory committee.

Papazian operates a Facebook page entitled Bronx Bolshevik Bulletin, which lambastes Ocasio-Cortez.

The page includes numerous posts blasting Ocasio-Cortez for being a 'socialist.'

After Amazon pulled out of its plans for a Queens headquarters, Papazian posted last month: '#BronxBolshevik is so full of herself that she has a pathological need to lead every Social Justice parade, and joined outside agitators to kill the hopes and dreams of a neighborhood whose affairs she had no business interfering with.'

Ocasio-Cortez, whose district includes parts of the New York City boroughs of the Bronx and Queens, has sought to push her party to the left on environmental and economic issues.

She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November in an upset victory over a more mainstream Democratic incumbent.

Corbin Trent, a spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez, said in response to Papazian's plans to run against her: 'Democracy is a beautiful thing and we think more people should participate in it.'

The Senate roundly rejected Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal as expected on Tuesday with not a single senator voting 'yes' for the progressive star's signature policy initiative.

Ocasio-Cortez defended herself after the 57-0 defeat and argued she encouraged the Democratic senators to vote 'present' instead of in the affirmative.

'I encouraged them to vote present, along w/ others. McConnell tried to rush the #GreenNewDeal straight to the floor without a hearing. The real question we should be asking: Why does the Senate GOP refuse to hold any major hearings on climate change?,' the self-described socialist explained in a tweet responding to the lack of Democratic votes.

'The GOP's climate delaying is costing us lives + destroying communities. Iowa, Nebraska & many in the Midwest are catastrophically flooded right now, in one of the 1st major climate change disasters of 2019. A #GreenNewDeal urges us to pursue a plan on the scale of the problem,' she added.

Democrats slammed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for holding a 'sham' vote on the matter - it was a non-binding resolution, meaning it had no force of law, and needed 60 votes to advance in the legislative process, which was an impossible task given Democrats only have 47 votes in their corner.

Bride and Prejudice's Jess appears on The Morning Show without fiancé Seyat - Daily Mail

'Mother-in-law from hell' Fatima has vowed to 'destroy' her son Seyat's wedding, after disapproving of his fiancée Jessica on Bride and Prejudice

And Jessica, 21, sparked break-up rumours on Tuesday after she made a promotional appearance on Channel Seven's The Morning Show without her husband-to-be.

In light of Seyat's noticeable absence from the program, host Larry Emdur asked if the young couple were still together after filming the series.

'We have spoken to you a couple of times but never with Seyat. What's going on? Larry asked.

He continued: 'Has he done a big exclusive deal with another network? Why haven't you guys been on together?'

However, Jessica brushed off any suggestion the couple had separated and instead claimed that Seyat was just busy with work commitments.

'Seyat is busy with work. He's really full-on with work at the moment and it's quite demanding for him,' she explained.

'He does find it quite hard to get away from work.'

During her interview, Jessica also spoke about the moment Fatima gatecrashed her wedding to Seyat - a scene which is expected to air on Tuesday's episode.

'I was anxious heading in and you will have to wait and see to see how I react to whatever happens. But it was an anxious time for everyone,' she said.

It comes after Jessica told TV Week on Monday that she believes Fatima's overprotective behaviour stems from an irrational fear of 'losing' her youngest son.

'She thinks she's losing her son,' Jessica explained.'It's about letting him go, but it's also about her not liking me.

'I've tried to tell her that just because people move on, it doesn't mean they're going to forget about their parents. But it's like speaking to a brick wall.'

In a dramatic teaser for Tuesday's episode, Fatima stormed her son's wedding to Jessica with the intention of stopping the ceremony.

'I'm gonna destroy the wedding!' she snarled in a voiceover while arriving at the outdoor nuptials.

'This is sickening,' she later snapped from the front row, before the camera cut to Jess bursting into tears at the altar.

Fatima has been a harsh critic of Seyat's relationship with Jessica throughout this year's season of Bride and Prejudice.

In addition to believing the couple are too young to marry, she is of the opinion that Jess is promiscuous and unsuitable for her son.

Bride and Prejudice continues Tuesday at 7:30pm on Channel Seven

Newly engaged British couple who dropped their engagement ring down a grate in New York's Times Square are identified after police launch Twitter effort to track them down - Daily Mail

A newly engaged British couple who managed to drop their engagement ring down a grate in New York's Times Square will be reunited with the diamond jewellery after a huge search effort by the NYPD.

John Drennan, 36, and his fiance Daniella Anthony, 34, who live in Peterborough were caught on camera frantically searching for the ring in Times Square on Friday night after it slipped off her finger and fell through a grate.

The distraught couple had asked nearby NYPD officers to help but they were unable to immediately locate the ring.

The NYPD later put a call out on social media asking for help locating the couple because officers had luckily managed to retrieve the engagement ring.

The relieved couple have now revealed they were in the city celebrating being together for ten years - when John popped the question in Central Park - but the ring was too big.

'I want to clarify that I did not propose over a grate in Times Square - that's where we lost it,' Mr Drennan said to the BBC.

'We were walking back to the hotel. I can still visualise the ring. Bouncing once… bouncing twice and then it was gone.'

Despite the drama which unfolded - the original proposal was perfect - the couple recalled.

John said: 'The time was right. There were autumn leaves everywhere and not many people.'

Daniella had not wanted to wear the ring, but John had insisted.

'I tried to tell John it was too big, but he insisted I wear it,' Ms Anthony told the BBC.

John added: 'I told her it was fine. I was just so happy to finally call her my fiancée after all this time.'

Officers posted the surveillance images and a photo of the engagement ring on Twitter.

The couple who do not often use Twitter were alerted to the post by friends as soon as they touched down in London on Sunday morning

They have since been in touch with police and they are working to return the ring safely.

Both John and Daniella took to Twitter to express their delight and thank the NYPD officers involved.

Despite police initially saying John dropped the ring while proposing, the couple clarified the proposal actually occurred in Central Park earlier that day.

In extremely unlucky circumstances, the ring slipped off Daniella's finger as they were walking over a subway grate in Times Square later that night.

'Thank you so much @NYPD and everyone for sharing and reuniting me with my ring! Proposal was in Central Park and fell off over the drain! Thought was gone forever! Can't thank officers enough!' Daniella tweeted.

John said police had to physically stop him from climbing down the drain so he could search himself.

'So so happy to have ring back! God bless America!' he tweeted.

The couple also thanked everyone who stopped and helped them on the day - including a little girl who hugged Daniella and told her 'not to worry'.

'At the time, that hug meant everything,' John said.

NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill confirmed that the couple had been in touch.

'Found 'em! Well done Twitterverse. The relieved couple is back in their home country now, but @NYPD will be sure to get the ring to them quickly... and safely. Happy holidays, everyone.'

He then tweeted a photo of the happy couple, saying: 'Congrats to John and his betrothed, Daniella (they're from across the pond, about 2 hours north of London). All's well that end's well. #gratenews'.

Whole Foods workers want to unionize as Amazon plans layoffs - Daily Mail

Workers at Whole Foods are looking to unionize after rumors parent company Amazon are planning mass layoffs in an order to reduce costs.

It's not the first time Whole Foods workers have tried to organize themselves but it is the first attempt since Amazon bought the company.

The email reveals strains between managers and lower-level employees at the supermarket chain.

Workers at Whole Foods are urging their fellow employees to unionize. Demands include a $15 minimum wage, 401k matching, paid maternity leave, and lower health insurance deductibles

'Over the past year, layoffs and the consolidations of store-level positions at Whole Foods Market have upset the livelihood of team members, stirred, anxiety, and lowered moral [sic] within stores,' the email states.

It alleges Whole Foods CEO John Mackey sold the store to Amazon 'with an agreement to trim hundreds of millions of dollars of labor from our stores.'

'Department order writers, supervisors, store scanners, and customer service teams positions are currently the most vulnerable.'

The letter continues goes on, 'There will continue to be layoffs in 2019 and beyond as Amazon aims to aggressively trim our labor force before it expands with new technology and labor models.'

Workers are now trying to organize themselves with the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union which already represents workers from big department stores, including Macy's and H&M.

Amazon denies that it treats its employees poorly, and says it is a 'fair and responsible' employer but Whole Foods workers fear they could be replaced by automation in the future

In the past, Whole Foods fought against attempts to unionize but it now seems that its takeover by Amazon is pushing workers to do finally do something.

Demands include giving all workers a $15/hour minimum wage, 401k matching, paid maternity leave, and lower health insurance deductibles.

Workers for Amazon have long alleged poor working conditions and pay packets.

Whole Foods used to be considered a good employer and had provided better wages and benefits than its competitors.

Whole Foods has released an official statement on the matter.

'We respect the individual rights of our team members and have an open-door policy that encourages team members to bring their comments, questions, and concerns directly to their team leaders. We believe this direct connection is the most effective way to understand and respond to the needs of our workforce and creates an atmosphere that fosters open communication and empowerment. We offer competitive wages and benefits and are committed to the growth and success of our team members.'
